A: I worked at a jewerly store and your skin could be causing it to do that…..its an acid reaction……or have you maybe got into some bleach or cleaners? Also perfume or makeup can tarnish silver….you could try to take it to a jewerly store and they could take a look at it but other than that theres really not much you can do….thats why people try to get white gold which cost 2 times as much simply because you can have them put more white gold on it once the nickel starts to wear off…….im sorry wish I could help more good luck!!

A: You used an antibacterial hand wash its from Palmolive and the colour is orange. Put some in your hand and clean the necklace with rubbing the palms together and the hand wash will turn green keep doing that unit the green colour stops and let it air dry.

Q: Lately my sterling silver necklaces are turning my skin dark. But it cleans right up. Why is this happening?
I have always worn jewerly and sterling silver is my favorite. For Christmas my husband bought me a very expensive sterling silver necklace from Helzberg Diamonds. I noticed it was turning my skin dark.. you could see the outline of the necklace after I took it off! Then I would wipe it off my skin and it was gone. I took the necklace back and they cleaned it. Came home.. same thing. Now today I was wearing a cross necklace I have worn for years.. sure enough, took it off and a dark pattern of my cross was still on my skin! Why is this happening all of the sudden? The only things that changed lately is that my thyroid medicine was raised and I did have a miscarriage this last year. Other than that, I have no clue what is causing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

A: Essentially the Black is silver oxide or tarnish that is transferring to your skin from the necklace.
Reasons include:-
1. The necklace is too tight. It often occurs with rings, when there is no opportunity of air forming a barrier between the silver oxide and the skin.
2. Silver Oxide is a result of the silver coming into contact with Sulphides. Sometimes the transfer of silver oxide onto the skin is accelerated when the skin is ommitting a higher degree of sulphides (Sulphur) than usual – this could be a direct consquence of the drugs you are taking.
3.The necklace still has a residue of polish chemicals on its surface. Washing it in warm soapy water and throughly rinsing it to remove any sulphies in the soap can sometimes help.

Q: Is it possible to engrave my initials on a sterling silver necklace?
I went to a jeweler who told me that engraving sterling silver is bad because it would come out black. but they suggested that I ask around and see if other jewelers could do it.

A: Hi there,,,,

Well, it is not a question of it coming out black, but a question of the sterling silver continuing to tarnish as sterling silver does. The engraving would always tend to be tarnished and it would really be hard to get into the engraved crevices. It does make sense. Of course you can have it engraved, as there is quite a bit of engraving on sterling silver flutes…. but again, the engraving does tarnish and then the words do turn black. The only way to get into the crevices is to take the piece to the jewelers… but you would be doing that all of the time with your necklace. If you really want to have it engraved, it is your piece and now you know what to expect about it tarnishing.

i have an old sterling silver necklace and i want it to shine like brand new but i dont know how.

A: If you don’t want to use any of the commercially available polishes or dips then there’s a neat video that I found showing how you can make old sterling silver jewellery shine like new by using baking soda, an aluminium foil dish and hot water.

Basically you put the jewellery into the aluminium foil dish, cover it in baking soda and then add boiling water. Depending on how dirty the piece is you may need to repeat the process.

What would you rather have, a sterling silver necklace that says Tiffany on it from Tiffany’s or diamond stud earrings? This is a gift for my best friends birthday. A: Well…for the most part mixing gold and silver is kind of tacky, but it really depends on what charm and what necklace you’re talking about. if it’s a big gold charm on a thin silver necklace, you might be able to pull it off. Yet if the chain is heavy and thick…probably not. All you can do is use your own good judgment!
