Q: Pearl Necklace?
My Mom would like to purchase a nice grey pearl necklace, bracelet set. What should she look for when buying a real pearl set? How can she tell the difference between stained pearls and real freshwater pearls? What are the best places to buy from in Minnesota or on the web? Any and all suggestions are appreciated!!
A: Genuine pearls usually have tiny bumps in them. Putting a bit of vinegar on a genuine pearl will make it bubble. The nacre in pearls which is calcium carbonate, reacts to vinegar by producing bubbles. Fake pearls do not react to vinegar.
Another way to test is to rub the pearl gently against your teeth. If it feels sandy, it’s real.
Sorry, but I don’t know anything about Minnesota, and I don’t know how you’d guarantee the real deal by purchasing them online, but I hope the info I did provide helps.
Q: I have a pearl necklace set (earrings necklace a& bracelet) it is brand new. Any ideas where I could sell it?
A: I’m assuming real pearls. As people have said: eBay etc. however a lot of jewellers buy jewellery, however they will sell it second hand so to make a mark up (usually 3 x the buying price) so they’ll offer you a price way below its value.
If you go down this route do a lot of research first as the offers can vary widely! Also don’t ask them to value them, ask for how much they’ll buy them off you for – big difference.
Although most places won’t buy earings as they can’t sell them second hand, even if you haven’t worn them.
However your best bet (if you can get hold of the receipt) is to return it.
Good luck!
Q: I’m looking for a set of a pearl necklace, bracelet and earrings?
I’m looking for a set of a pearl necklace, bracelet and earrings that can be purchased online. I’m turning seventeen and my grandmother has offered to buy me a set as a gift..So I’m looking for a classic and tasteful set (moderately priced)
Thank youâ„
A: Difficult to buy online as the quality will be difficult to determine. Moriarty’s Gem Art travels and buys from the pearl farms in Hong Kong. Fine necklaces from $200-$400 depending on the size from 7mm to 9 mm. You can make the whole set for $300 to $500. Would suggest a double strand for the bracelet. Web site is moregems.com but I dont think they show pearls other than Black Tahitians. you can call 1-800-348-4499 and talk to Steve Tuesday-Saturday

She is almost 20.

Q: How much would you pay for a pearl necklace?
I have a set but they were my Great Grandmothers so obviously I don’t want to wear them incase they get lost or damaged. I want to buy a nice pearl necklace & a set of earings. How much should I expect to pay?
Is this the sort of thing I should ask my dad to buy me or something I can afford myself?
How is that dirty=/ ?
A: There are lots of pearl shapes (ROUND PEARLS, OFF-ROUND PEARLS, OVAL PEARLS, BUTTON PEARLS, BIWA PEARLS, etc…) and types (BAROQUE, JAPANESE, FRESHWATER, etc…). Price depends on its quality and background. A good pearl necklace is not very cheap from $100 to $ 1000.00 or more.

I would like to sell Japanese Hanadama Pearl Necklace and Earring set with certificate from Pearl Science Laboratory of Japan, the item has been listed on ebay store for long time but still can not sell it out, my price is cheaper than when I bought from supplier in Japan, I want to close my ebay store as soon as possible, I supposed to sell high quality pearls, but people always complain it’s expensive than buying from China, it’s not good business for me. Q: Are there alternative ways to strand a pearl necklace?
I had my set for about a year and they broke apart. I had them restrung twice and they just broke again at one of the knots! Is there another way – a stronger way- to strand pearls while still keeping them from rubbing against each other? I only wear them to work and take them off right away and I am always very gentle. Any ideas? Thanks.
A: I suppose you had them strung on silk? There is a nylon thread available that is stronger, it can be knotted as well. There is also professional jewelry wire available. It has a number of micro wires twisted together and then coated with nylon. This would be the strongest possibility, but you cannot knot it. You could have different little beads threaded in between the pearls to keep them from rubbing. That depends a bit on the quality of the pearls and which look you like.
Cheers
Q: Narrowed it down to either a necklace or a Ring?
Should I buy my girlfriend a ring or a necklace. I really want to spend 600$ on a flashy diamond ring. We have been together for 2.5 years. I have already bought her a pearl set, tiffanys heart necklace, and a nice bracelet , + a jewlery box that is very nice too. What you think? I’m not asking her to marry me, but I want to get her a ring!
A: if you’re not asking her you marry you then i definately would not buy a diamond ring. right time she sees it she’s gonna think you’re gonna propose. bad idea. in fact, i would probably bypass the idea of a ring at all. i’d save that first ring purchase for the engagement ring. it’ll make it that much more special. so i guess i’m saying go for the necklace. i’d probably pick out something that she can wear everyday. that way she can have more opportunities to show it off!

Q: how can i set a pearl without drilling it?
I have a small freshwater pearl that i got for Christmas from my boyfrind and I want to make it a necklace or a ring. I don’t want to drill because that can break the pearl. Also, I’m on a budget. Please help me!
A: There are very few ways to set a pearl without drilling it. A pearl is too fragile to be set like a diamond. Setting an undrilled pearl usually means building a piece around the pearl.
The best and least expensive way to set the pearl would be to wrap it with wire. Check the example here: http://www.pearlparadise.com/detail.aspx?ID=1972
The pearl is undrilled and the setting is simply 14k wire that was hand-twisted to hold the pearl securely.
Don’t use any sort of glue as this may damage the nacre of the pearl.
Q: What is the best and safest way to clean an old pearl necklace?
I have some jewelry that belonged to my great grandmother. There is a pearl necklace with what appears to be a turquoise clasp. What is the best and safest way to clean this? My cousin is getting married soon and is looking for a set of pearls to wear. I thought this would be sweet for her…old, borrowed AND blue

A: Though Blitz and The Pearl Doctor both sell specialized solutions for cleaning pearls, you can also use a very delicate soap, like Ivory Flakes. Stay away from harsh chemicals that are ammonia based or an ultra sound machine. I’ve inherited and ruined some strands with improper care and cleaning, but have found solutions made for cleaning pearls do work, but so do Ivory flakes fully dissolved in warm water, soaking and using a soft cloth to gently remove body oils and accumulated gunk. If there is dirt inside the holes, use a toothpick to gently extracate it (dampened in the soap flakes). I gently wipe my remaining stands of pearls with a similarly treated cloth after every time I wear them to keep the body oils and dirt from accumulating, too. What a wonderful piece of family history to include in your cousin’s wedding.
