A: E-bay. My mum used to sell loads of gold on E-bay. To know if you’re getting a good deal, find out the scrap value of gold at the minute (this is the £ per gram of gold) I am unsure what it is now, it used to be £2.70 per gram, though i recently heard that it had gone up to £5 in London. Anyway google it or something. Then when you see a chain on E-bay, convert the grams to £’s to get the scrap value and then bid whatever you want on top of that depending how the auction is going. So long as it reached it’s scrap value mum used to be happy to sell. Good luck.

Q: I have a gold chain that I would like to know what or where I can find out its worth?
Its a mens chain necklace. It is quite heavy and its 22 inches long and it is 22 K gold. Would like to know if anybody knows alot about gold and its worth?

A: Don’t even bother with the pawn shops. They are a rip off. I took a $750 gold and diamond necklace to 5 different pawn shops and they all wanted to give me about $40. Take it to a jeweler to get it appraised.

NOTE: Selling jewelry is like selling a car. You almost always take a loss on it.

Q: Should i trust eBay?
I’m thinking of starting an account on eBay but i don’t know whether to trust the people or not becuase some things don’t seem right, because right now there are ford mondeos going for 1p and mens gold chains going for less than a pound and finishing in a couple of hours. Is this right? And is it easy to start an account?

A: Ebay is unfortuantely just like the rest of the world, full of good and bad people. There are millions of transactions that go very well and yet there are also so many that go wrong because of conmen/women and peoples different expectations. I have been a buyer and seller for a few years now and have suffered greatly but also had some great bargains. I would suggest you do as you are already doing and tread carefully. One step at a time and if its too good to be true, then it probably is! Good luck!

A: Get another similar chain and compare the two, gold ones should weigh more, but since it’s only 14K, it’s not that heavy.

Law requires stamping on all precious metal jewelries, so if you bought it in the US, it should be real.

Sounds a stupid question, but my gilfriends buying me a gold chain for my birthday next week, do any guys here have them? Those thick gold chains? Ive wanted one for a while now, but I do quite a bit of running and work out, and don’t want it to get in the way while exercising, which my job involves. Are they heavy? Can you feel them there all the time?

A: well, if it’s real gold it shouldn’t be that heavy. My guess is it’s probably sterling plated with gold, or a base metal plated with gold in which case, yes it probably will be on the heavy side and I wouldn’t wear it out jogging. In any case, if you want to keep your jewellry from tarnishing (especially if it’s not pure gold/silver) you shouldn’t shower/jog/swim with it either.
